Is Huck Finn a racist book?

Do you think The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a racist book? Why or why not?

  1. I believe that this book was considered racist back in that time period because when it was written racism was still around. Today i can't say that this book is racist because that wouldn't be true. As we read this book its unsettling because Twain used words and pointed out alot of unsettling things. What we read in Huckleberry finn is just the sad truth that went on in that time period. We cant change the past but we can tell the truth about it. Thats not being racist thats being honest

  2. I feel that this book is racist however its just an act. What I mean by this is that Mark Twain had different characters and they had their own personality's. Therefore, they were just living up to there standards. this book was based on a earlier time period so there was still slavery, and this is why the book contained all these harsh and foul words due to the way they treated them back then. So my opinion is that this book is racist but it has its limits like Mark Twain doesn't same very mean things about African Americans. Like I said its just to fit the characters personality.

  3. You two are correct in that Mark Twain was trying to portray life as it was in that time and in that place as accurately as possible. Because of that, this work is an example of literature that falls into the category called Realism. So yes, he depicts many characters who are racist, but what do you think his purpose is for doing so? Is he trying to hold up these racist characters as role models for us or are we supposed to dislike the racism in the book?

  4. I don't believe he wants us to see them as role models , I think he just wanted to create this characters because for the people in that time period that read his book will make them understand that its wrong and the things that was going on in that time shouldn't be going on. I believe his purpose is to make people understand that one is not better than the other.

  5. I believe that the book isn't racist but the story line of the book involves racism. For example, Jim being a slave, him being sold and called the n-word multiple times. Also, Pap's speech is racist but the book is not racist. It may have been racist the time it came out. Huckleberry doesn't treat him as a slave though. I think the book just shows how racism was back in the 1800s.

  6. I believe the book is racist but... I don't believe mark twain is racist in anyway. I personally think Mark Twain was trying to capture the way they spoke and acted at the time this book took place. This book clearly showed how they treated slaves in the 1800's for example showing jim getting treated unequally and getting called the n word many times throughout the book.

  7. I believe that "The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn" is a racist book but it also isn't. I believe that it's a racist book because of how often the book uses the n word. I believe that it's not a racist book only because they aren't all goIng against African Americans. It also never says that Mark Twain is racist or ever was racist besides being a good writer.

  8. I believe that "Huck Finn" is not a racist book but it's story line is based around a time of racism. I believe that the "N" word was used to emphasize the amount of racism that was around at that time. I also believe that if it was an African American that wrote the book instead of Mark Twain, racism wouldn't be a topic

  9. I think Huckleberry Finn is a racist book, but only because it's centered around the time period where racism was strong and slavery was legal. The "N" word is constantly used as if it's a natural word for African-Americans. They also stereotype all African Americans and treat the like dirt. They get no respect from anyone and people have no care for their character. Mark Twain isn't racist he's just portraying how life was back in the day. It was a racist time period where whites were in power and had a disregard for African Americans, Mark Twain isn't being racist, he's just showing us through literature.

I believe that this book is racist but it doesn't really talk about it in the book.Mark Twain wrote this to talk about what some people did and how they lived but it's nt really talking about racism but it has to talk about slavery and stuff because the book was made during this time period. They talk about run away slaves and people who wanted to kill eachother for the raice but the book isn't really based on that. This book mainly talks about how people in the book live and mostly about huck but it's not really anything about racism if you think about it but it is in the book because they have to put those thing there because the way it was back than.

  11. I believe that this book is racist but Mark Twain wasn't. During slavery and when African Americans were treated badly that is how folks would talk to African Americans by using the N-Word. All Mark Twain is telling us is how this is what was going on and how it has affected people in the past.

  12. I believe that this book is racist at times but, was written this way in order to set examples of how people thought about African Americans back then. Mark Twain probably made himself come off as a racist but, he is just emphasizing through his literature of how African Americans were being treated.

  13. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not a racist book. It may come off as racist while reading but it's just the best way of showing how people thought about African Americans. For example, the constant use of "nigger" seems racist, but Mark Twain is describing how African Americans were treated back then.

  14. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not a racist book, in my eyes i see it ass a book that reflects a time period where it was okay to put someone away for the skin color, put someone down because of they are different; I'm not saying it's okay but it's just a different time period its exceptional. you would have to keep in mind that during the time it was legal, and the N word was not offensive to every one else when they herd it only to the black people.

  15. I feel that since this book was written in the late 1800s, the book is considered racist. During this time period there was a lot of racism because of slavery. Although the story is fictional, it does have little history in it. Jim is an example because he was a slave, and like most slaves did, they would run away from their owner and try to escape to the north where life was easier to live rather than the south. This story used a lot of profanity, but again, the story comes back to the time period it was written in. This is how lots of people talked back then; it was normal.
