Cam Lewis - Period 3
ReplyDeleteChapter 19 - Huck describes a very simple life on the raft. He learns to use his resources of nature to guide and protect him during his travels. For example; to stay safe, they travel the river at night while its dark and very quiet. During the day, they hide the raft, wash in the river, sleep and gather food for the next day.
Chapter 20 - Huck tells the conmen that they travel at night since everyone thinks he's a run way slave. The men continue to con, or they at least think they are fooling Huck, but they are really not. The conmen go into town and trick the people out of money. They also come up with a plan to protect Jim incase someone stops them.
Chapter 21 - The conmen who have been practice their Shakespeare have decided to try their talents in one of the towns along the river. While in the town, something goes terribly wrong between two people who live there. Boggs, the town drunk, threatens Sherbern who own the biggest store in that town. Unfortunately, Sherbern ends up killing Boggs.
Chapter 22 - The people in the town are mad that Sherbern killed Boggs. They show up at his house and try to bully him. Sherbern is not afraid of the challenge, stands his ground, and the crowd leaves. The towns people go and watch the circus.
**Compare and Contrast** - In these 4 chapters, I would say that Huck really prefers to live on the raft because it seems so calm! He clearly doesn't want to be on the land because he has to hide his raft everyday, witnesses a murder, baths in the river everyday and is always having people looking at him. The raft is just watching the stars, feeling the water, maybe even looking at other boats but most importantly, its quiet!
QUESTIONS => 1. What did the conmen come up with to protect Jim ? 2. What happened at the circus that Huck was upset about ?
When I read you compare and contrast i thought it was really cool and I enjoyed it alot. Felt like you were right on track liked how you emphasized all four chapters. Good Questions. Good summaries
Deletegood summaries, looks like your on top of everything keep up the good work boy.

Chapter 19:
JIm and Huck keep going down the river and then they find two men on the river who are begging to be let on to the raft. The two men try to trick Huck and Tom and they treat them like royalty until they find out there really liers but they act like they don’t know.
Chapter 20:
The Duke and Dauphin ask if Jim is a runaway slave and then Huck makes up a story.Duke gets Dauphin to agree to perform Shakespeare and then he gets eighty dollars and kisses from young pretty girls but after he prints out a reward for Jim’s capture.
Chapter 21:

Chapter 22:
A lynch mob go to Sherburn’s house and then Sherbun delivers a speech about human nature. Then Huck goes to a circus, only twelve people go to Duke’s performance, and then he prints another handbill for his next performance.
-Huck life seems more comfortable on the shore than Huck’s experiences on raft because when he has been on the raft he just found to guys he just really are trying to get money by doing performances and other things but when he was on shore he was trying to find his way to live by stealing and stuff but he seemed really happy when he was living with the Grangerfords.
-Why do Huck and Jim choose to stay with Duke and Dauphin?
-What’s going on with the lynch mob that went to Sherburn’s house?
Q.1 - I feel that there not trying to stay with them its just that they wont leave them alone
DeleteThat's true because they won't go away but if Huck and Jim chose to leave them than they could of.
DeleteGood questions!
DeleteQ1 - Huck and Jim know that the Duke and Dauphin are not to be trusted, so they don't want to upset them or anything.
Q2 - the lynch mob in chp 22 is an example of the violence that Huck witnesses when he is on shore, which is why others are right when they say Huck is more comfortable on the raft, but you are also right, Lilliana, when you point out that the Duke and Dauphin have invaded the comfortable home that Huck and Jim have created on the raft.
Chapter 19- The Duke and The Dauphin Come A Board
ReplyDeleteSummary-Jim and Huck come across these two men that claimed to be King Dauhpin and a Duke of France. Huck thinks that they are frauds but hes trying to keep the peace on the raft.
Chapter20-What Royalty did to ParkVille
Summary-Duke and Dauphin question Huck about Jim asking if hes a run away slave. Huck makes up a story and tells them a lie about their situation.
Chapter 21- An Arkansaw Difficulty
Summary-Duke and Dauphin recite their line of Shake sphere and Dauphin Duke and Huck go to a small town to see Romeo and Juliet . Boggs gets shot by Sherbum and his daughter witnesses it.
Chapter 22- Why the lynching Bee Failed
Summary-Sherbum shuts the "MOB" down and threatens them with a speech . Huck witnesses a bad bullying circus.
Question 1- Did the speech Dauphin and Duke recite have a personal
meaning to them?
Question 2- How is a "real man" a man that does things in secret?
Hucks life on the raft is different from his life on shore he likes when he gets up in the morning on the raft. One thing is that on the raft and on the shore they tend to run in to people or pass by people. But Huck doesn't really prefer to be on land.
Some experiences that Huck's had on shore was with the Gaugefords and the Sheperdsons . When he witnessed them kill each other. Also on shore he witnessed gruesome hangings (meaning already hung bodies in the tress of young African american boys). He also saw women heads in windows , Huck also witnessed a another murder .
In support of my opinion I found a quote that shows Huck's preference to the raft. "Its lovely to live on a raft . We had the sky up there , all speckled with stars , and we used to lay on out backs and look up at them. To me this quote just by the first couple of words shows how Huck feels about the raft and he likes it.
Examples Of Satire- 1. The whole circus act with the ring-maker
2. When colonel Sherbum told the "Mobs" off.
I like how on your compare and contrast, you used details to make sure the reader understands how life was similar and different on a boat and on land!

Compare & Contrast
Boat: Peaceful, quiet, camouflage
Same: Free, Have someone with him, risky
Land: Visible, easy to get caught, doesn’t blend in, always aware
Where does Huck feel most comfortable?
Huck feels more comfortable on the boat because he is away from all the trouble and it is harder for himm and jim to be spotted or recognized, and its easier to keep a low profile.
Q.1- Will the handbills get Huck and Jim caught
Q.2- How will they resolve the death of the drunk guy who was killed in front of his daughter?
2 Examples Of Satire
DeleteS1. At the circus
S2. when sherburn yelled at the riot of people trying to kill him
Good examples of satire - how were you able to recognize those scenes as satiric? If one of your classmates needed help identifying examples of irony, what advice would you give them?

Where does Huck feel most comfortable?
Huck feels more comfortable on the boat because he is away from all the trouble and it's he just feels safe.

DeleteChapter 19: Huck and Jim encounter two begging men. People are trying to kill the men. One of the men says he's a duke, the other says he's a king. They are both lying, and Huck and Jim decide not to say anything, because they don't want any trouble.
ReplyDeleteChapter 20: Duke and Dauphin ask if Jim is a run away slave. Huck makes up yet another story, to cover up for Jim. Duke gets Dauphin to preform, so they go to the next town. Huck and Jim know that Duke and Dauphin are cons, because Dauphin told people he was a "pirate" and got 80 dollars from them.
Chapter 21: Duke and Dauphin do the balcony scene in Shakespere's Romeo and Juliet. Boggs who is an alcoholic, is shot by the owner of a bar named Sherbern.
Chapter 22: A group of angry people who were mad that Sherbern killed Boggs showed up to his house. They want to lynch him. Sherbern doesn't give in, is brave, and the angry crowd eventually leaves Sherbern's house.
Compare and Contrast:
Raft: Huck feels very safe, and has all his supplies, and can hide very easily, and make a quick getaway if necessary.
Shore: Huck is in plain sight, and could easily get caught. He doesn't really have a quick getaway, but he could find shelter, like when him and Jim found that tavern that they stayed in.
I believe that Huck feels safer in the raft. Him and Jim have been using it for a while now, and they haven't been caught yet. Jim and Huck are scared, and the raft helps them get away when they need to, and transport all the supplies that they will need.
Questions:
Question 1: Huck and Jim have been away from Ms. Watson, and Pap for a while, will they soon get caught?
Question 2: Will Duke and Dauphin eventually be caught as cons?
What about responses to 2 of your peers?
DeleteChap 19- Huck and Jim are on the water again and they spot these two guys that needed help, so Huck gives them a ride. Then the Two guys which one was older and one was younger they said that were sons of the King which Huck finds out is a lie.
ReplyDeleteChap 20- The two men start questioning Jim about if he is a run away slave and Huck makes up a story; Then the men wanted to put on a shake spear performance but realize that people weren't there to watch because they had a religious group to attend.
Chap 21- Huck, Jim and the two men visit Arkansas and that's when they see lazy guys fighting over chewing tobacco. Then Hick sees a shooting of a man which they also want to lynch the man who did the shooting which was Sherburn.
Chap 22- The lynch mob goes after sherburn at his house and sherburn was on top of his roof and tells people about human nature. Then Huck goes to a show and sees a man acting drunk and Huck starts to get scared because he doesn't want anything to happen to the man.
The satire that I notice was where was where in chap 22 where a man was doing an act of being a drunk man and I found that as a satire because in Arkansas when I first read there were a bunch of drunk guys arguing over chewing tobacco.
Will Huck try to "save" The man in the performance?
Will Jim be caught?
1. I think Huck and Jim are probably going to be caught because now tDuke and Dauphine are started to put up these shows and somebody will probably say oh there goes Jim and Juck the two people that ran away.
2. I think Duke and Dauphine will be caught as cons because of the fact that they cant prove there from France and the kings son and they don't even know about speaking french.
Huck's life on the raft is so much better because he is more free, he is starting to experience more about life. he isn't abused,
and hes starting to have a better friendship with a slave. Now, Huck's life on the shore is crazy because his father would abuse him, hit him for no reason and lock him up and would even try to kill while he is drunk.
What about responses to 2 of your peers?
Deletemy responses to my peers are under the last question I asked "will Jim be caught "?
DeleteChapter 19: Huck comes upon two men on shore fleeing some trouble and begging to be let onto the raft. after that The younger man declares himself an impoverished English duke and gets Huck and Jim to wait on him and treat him like royalty. The old man then reveals his true identity as the dauphin, the long lost son of King Louis XVI of France. Huck and Jim then wait on the men and call them “Duke” and “Your Majesty,” respectively. Huck quickly realizes that the two men are liars.
ReplyDeleteChapter 20: The duke and the dauphin ask whether Jim is a runaway slave. Huck makes up a story about how he was orphaned and tells them that he and Jim have been forced to travel at night since so many people stopped his boat to ask whether Jim was a runaway. That night, the duke and the dauphin take Huck’s and Jim’s beds while Huck and Jim stand watch against a storm.
Chapter 21: after waking up the duke and dauphin practice the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet and the sword fight from Richard III on the raft. The duke also works on his recitation of the “To be, or not to be” soliloquy from Hamlet, which he doesn't know well at all, throwing in lines from other parts of Hamlet and even some lines from Macbeth.
Chapter 22: Huck then goes to the circus, a “splendid” show with a quick-witted clown. A performer, pretending to be a drunk, forces himself into the ring and tries to ride a horse, apparently hanging on for dear life. The crowd roars in amusement, except for Huck, who cannot bear to watch the poor man in danger.
1: why did Huck picked up the two men in the first place?
2: why are the two men pertaining to be the son of king Louis?
great job. i like your questions

Chapter 19
Huck and Jim were rowing downstream and picked two men who seemed to be in trouble, so they carried them to safety. Huck and Jim were talked into believing the two men were royalty so they called them their respective names. Huck realizes they’re not royalty, but doesn’t say anything.
Chapter 20
Huck and Jim are traveling with the two con men and stop in a town so the con men can do a Shakespeare performance. Everyone’s gone in the woods for a religious revival meeting and one of the con men pretend to be a pirate going to a revival meeting and he got eighty dollars from the people. The duke makes a claim reward for Jim and makes ten dollars selling things using their printer.
Chapter 21
The con men are practicing their Romeo and Juliet acts on the raft. Then they stop in a town and put up flyers for their show. Huck witnesses a murder and the town sees the dead man, but they don’t care, the Lynch mob go to lynch Sherburn.
Chapter 22
The lynch mob goes to Sherburn’s house and trespasses onto his property. However, Sherburn says how they don’t hang people during the day and the mob dispersed. The con men put on their show and have 12 people in the audience.
Compare and Contrast
When Huck is on shore he has to hide himself. He lies a lot and can’t really be himself because he’s scared to be noticed, so he has to stay low profile. When Huck is in the raft he is more open and able to be himself. He acts more as he would because he’s more comfortable on the raft.
Satire
I notice that they talk about the religious people in the form of yelling and singing which is an exaggeration. They don;t go into the woods and just yell and sing.
Questions
Why doesn’t Huck and Jim perform along with the con men?
How come while Huck and Jim are traveling they aren’t questioned?

On land : timid, not easygoing
Questions: Why doesn't huck leave the con men
How hasn't jim been caught yet?
Good job keeping your summaries to a maximum of one or two sentences. But,I think you should make them a little more descriptive. Great work though!
DeleteChapter 19:
ReplyDeleteAs Huck and Jim began their journey downstream they spot two men who seem to be in trouble. Huck and Jim pick these two men up and were convinced into thinking they were royal. Huck then realizes that they aren't loyal but, keeps this to himself.
Chapter 20:
The Duke and the Dauphin question Jim because they believe that he is a runaway slave. Huck makes up this story about how he was orphaned and have been traveling at night to avoid being questioned. The Duke and the Dauphin then want to stop in a town to reenact a Shakespeare performance but, notice no one is there so they then head into the woods. The Dauphin pretends to be a pirate and makes 80$ and kisses from young ladies. The Duke makes a claim reward for Jim.
Chapter 21:
The Duke and Dauphin practice their Romeo and Juliet acts on the boat as they head into Arkansas. The two men then post flyers of their show in the town. Huck is a bystander to a murder which the victims daughter takes notice of.
Chapter 22:
The mob arrives at Sherburn’s house and he gives a speech about nature and the crowd leaves. Then, the Duke and Dauphin go on with their show with only a few people in attendance.
Comparison:
On the raft: Peaceful, Quiet, Relaxing.
On shore: Always aware, Paranoid, Stands out.
Comfort:
Huck feels more comfortable on the raft because he doesn't always have to be aware of where he is. While on shore he always has to be looking out for people who might find him familiar looking.
Questions:
Why won’t Huck tell Jim that the Duke and Dauphin aren't royal?
Why won’t Huck and Jim leave the two men behind?
Chapter 19:
ReplyDeleteHuck is traveling by night and sleeps and gathers food for the next day.
Chapter 20:
The cons try to fool Huck, although they aren’t, and they come up with a plan to keep Jim safe.
Chapter 21:
The cons try to put on a show about Shakespeare and a store owner, Sherbern, kills a town drunk, Boggs because he was threatened.
Chapter 22:
People are mad that Sherbern killed Boggs so they try to get back at him, but he stands his ground, so people leave and go to the circus.
Huck’s life is a lot calmer on the raft opposed to being on shore. When he’s on the raft it seems like there are no problems at all. On land Huck has to worry about people looking for him and bathing.
How were the men able to protect Jim?
Are Jim and Huck going to get caught soon?
